McCaul Awarded for 96% Conservative Voting Record

"This award is a reflection of Rep. McCaul's consistent support of conservative principles"
- David Keene, American Conservative Union

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Michael McCaul's (R-TX 10) stand against unprecedented government expansion and out of control spending has been recognized by the American Conservative Union, which presented McCaul its coveted ACU Ratings Award for 2009.

"This award represents my commitment to upholding conservative values and principles that the majority of citizens in my district expect," said Rep. McCaul. "We cannot continue down Nancy Pelosi's destructive path of government expansion and free spending, and raising taxes to pay for it."

"This award is a reflection of Representative McCaul's consistent support of conservative principles on a wide range of issues of concern to grass roots conservatives in 2009," said David A. Keene, Chairman of the American Conservative Union. "At a challenging time when the fundamental principles on which the American system of government are being challenged, Representative McCaul stands with those who are trying to preserve those principles."

Congressman McCaul scored a 96% conservative rating during the first session of the 111th Congress. In an 18 month span during a time of deep economic recession, Rep. McCaul voted against programs that will ultimately cost taxpayers $8.7 trillion:

  • Bailout                                   $700 billion
  • Stimulus                                  900 billion
  • Budget                                      3.6 trillion
  • Cap and Trade                       900 billion
  • Government-run Healthcare    2.6 trillion

In addition to his conservative voting record, Congressman McCaul is now in the third year of his stand against pork-filled earmarks. McCaul will not request earmarks until the broken system is 100% transparent as to the sponsor and recipient and until each earmark is subject to an up or down vote on the House floor.

The American Conservative Union presents its Ratings Award to members of Congress who score at least 80%. A full description of the 25 votes scored by ACU is available at http://67.20.95.56/congress-ratings/2009-u-s-house-vote-descriptions/.

Founded in 1964, ACU represents the views of Americans who are concerned with economic growth through lower taxes and reduced government spending and the issues of liberty, personal responsibility, traditional values and national security.
