In this day and age, there are many important issues at the forefront of the Lone Star State and our beloved country. Every day the news consumes our thoughts and guides our behaviors. One issue, however, that cannot be overlooked and deserves more coverage is the current fentanyl trafficking crisis that has led to mass-overdose deaths not only in our home state, but throughout this entire country. As more fentanyl is seized along the southern border and in American communities, research has shown this deadly drug has become the leading cause of death among Americans aged 18 to 45. A lethal drug like this exploits the most vulnerable individuals of our society and we owe it to the future generations to stop traffickers from bringing this poison onto America’s streets. US Rep. Michael McCaul is leading efforts in Congress to mitigate this crisis and save lives through legislation like H.R. 7359 Stop Fentanyl Border Crossings Act, and is working to build new strategies in detecting and targeting illicit flows of fentanyl. The current threat at hand does not distinguish between Republicans and Democrats, and I’m grateful for having a leader in Congress who is willing to work across the aisle in order to solve this growing problem and protect all Americans.
